The Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea has announced the Manus Island immigration detention centre will be closed down after the country's Supreme Court found Australia's detention of asylum seekers at the centre illegal.
Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has announced that the regional processing centre of Manus Island will close.
It follows the decision of the Supreme Court that found the centre to be unconstitutional.
P-N-G will immediately ask the Australian government to make alternative arrangements for the asylum seekers currently held at the Regional Processing Centre.
He says negotiations with Australia will focus on the timeframe for closing the Manus facility and managing the settlement of legitimate refugees who are interested instaying in P-N-G.
Mr O'Neill also notes the centre's closure will negatively effect the local economy.
