Applications for getting medicinal cannabis have risen, but the Greens argue the Federal Government's new access scheme is actually making it more difficult to get.

Medicinal cannabis can now be accessed under the Government scheme and through authorised prescribers, part of a move to legalise the products.

In 2016, the Therapeutics Goods Administration made cannabis a controlled, rather than prohibited, substance for medical purposes.

Combined with the legalisation of cultivating the drug, it was designed to make it easier for patients and doctors to access medicinal cannabis.

But Greens leader Richard Di Natale argues it has been made harder to access.

The Department of Health says, although applications for access have increased, the number of authorised prescribers has not.
