Melbourne's Monash Freeway will test the use of dynamic speed limits over a six-month trial which could see speeds increase from 80km/h to 100km/h.

A stretch of road on one of Melbourne's busiest freeways will be the first in Australia to trial dynamic speed limits. Speed limits on the Monash Freeway will move up and down based on live traffic conditions in what the Victorian government describes as an Australian-first technology trial.

The six-month trial will operate between High Street in Ashburton and Glenferrie Road in Toorak and will see speeds increase from 80km/h to 100km/h when conditions allow.

It will use existing technology including CCTV, road sensors and overhead electric signs to change the speed limit and if successful could be rolled out across other roadways across Melbourne.
