The new five dollar note released into circulation from September 1 will help visually impaired Australians distinguish between different banknotes.

It's the first time the Reserve Bank has issued a new note in 25 years.

For the vision impaired a tactile feature helps to tell difference between notes.

Two tiny, raised dots appear on the new $5 note.

The new feature means almost 360,000 visually impaired Australians will be able to distinguish between different denominations of banknotes.

The change is due in large part to Sydney teenager Connor McLeod.

He launched a discrimination complaint with the Australian Human Rights Commission and started a change.org petition calling for action on accessible currency which collected more than 56,000 signatures.
