World leaders have gathered in New York City for the United Nations Climate Action Summit, where nearly 70 countries have indicated they will step up climate action.
UN Secretary General António Guterres says he wants countries at the summit to commit to a list of demands, including increasing national targets for emission reductions, banning the building of new coal power stations, and reducing fossil fuel subsidies.
The summit comes as new data is released, showing the signs and impacts of global warming are speeding up.
A report compiled by the World Meteorological Organization says the five-year period from 2014 to 2019 is the warmest on record.
It says the world has warmed by 1.1 degrees Celsius since pre-industrial times, and temperatures are on track to increase by between 2.9 and 3.4 degrees Celsius by the end of the century.
