Australia is set to become the first country outside India to have laws targeting dowry abuse.

The Victorian Government is preparing legislation that will target unscrupulous husbands extorting dowry money from the families of their wives.

The state's Multicultural Affairs Minister Robin Scott says it's in response to the state's Royal Commission into Family Violence.

Dr Manjula O'Connor welcomes the move, saying that Indian women often fall victim to dowry abuse - where husbands take the money and gifts provided by the brides' family and abandon their partners.

The often-hidden plight of newly-arrived migrant women experiencing domestic violence has been highlighted in a Monash University report.
