The prime minister has announced proposed legislation that would keep some people convicted of terror-related offences behind bars.
Laws to hold terrorists who still pose a risk to the community behind bars indefinitely are needed to keep Australians safe, Malcolm Turnbull insists.
The prime minister announced the proposed legislation ahead of meetings federal Attorney-General George Brandis will hold with his state and territory counterparts to work out the details.
"The measures we are announcing today are designed to deter terrorism, prevent it, ensure that the nation and our people are kept safe," Mr Turnbull told reporters on Monday.
Given the evolving nature of terrorism, the change would equip Australia with another tool to combat the threat, Mr Turnbull said.
"It will provide a very real incentive for people in prison for terrorist offences not to engage in continued extremist activity," he added.
The prime minister believes the new laws enjoy strong support from the states and territories.
Senator Brandis expects to meet his counterparts very soon and plans to introduce legislation in the early days of the new parliament.
