Handwritten racist posters have been discovered in Ryde area, in Sydney’s north-east for about five years and most recently, about ten posters starting with ‘No more Asians. It’s not the face of Australia…We speak English’ disturb residents in the one of the most multicultural suburbs in NSW.
The posters obviously against Asian migrants, 457 visas and foreign businesses have been found in bus stops, electoral signs and outdoor advertisements.
All of the posters were removed and it is believed that the Ryde Police Area Command is closely looking into the incidents to identify those responsible for.
City of Ryde mayor Jerome Laxale says in his statement to the SBS Korean program “The City of Ryde was one of the most diverse cities in Australia that celebrate its multiculturalism and takes pride in making an inclusive society for all members of its community. “.
“Racism and the frankly embarrassing rubbish hate speech that was posted on signs throughout our suburbs have no place in Ryde and we as a community will not stand for it,” Cr Laxale say.
Cr Laxale also promises quick action to remove the signs.
Cr Peter Kim who has a Korean background also sends a message to Korean-Australian.
“Koreans living in Australia value multiculturalism. We should ignore the odd rotten apples and keep valuing multicultural Australia.” he says.
City of Ryde is holding a press conference on Tuesday May 22 in regards to the incident as well as to promote social inclusion within the community.
