The Sydney Morning Herald reports that North Korean Thae Yong-ho, his wife and their sons had to lead double lives for their survival.

Born into North Korea's elite class, North Korean defector Thae Yong-ho believed that North Korea was a socialist paradise.

However, in the 1990s, when Mr Thae was posted to North Korea's embassy in Denmark, he did doubt about the system he was indoctrinated in begin to grow, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

The paper says that it took another two decades before Mr Thae made a monumental decision.

Whenever Mr Thae and his family had to return to North Korea, they had to pretend they hated the West and living in the West was ugly.

In 2016, Mr Thae and his family vanished from North Korea's embassy in Ealing, West London later to re-emerge in Seoul.

Mr Thae said his decision to become one of North Korea's highest-ranking defectors ever was made out of love for his sons and their future children.
