The marginal seat became vacant last week when Labor M-P Mike Kelly retired due to health reasons.
Mr Constance has been the Bega M-P in the New South Wales parliament for 17 years and rose to national prominence over summer for his regular media appearances during the bushfire crisis.
He says he wants to run for federal parliament to better help the electorate recover from all the pain and trauma it's suffered in recent months.
Labor has nominated Kirsty McBain as its candidate for the Eden-Monaro [[mon-AIR-o]] federal by-election.
Ms McBain is the mayor of Bega [[BEE-ga]] and will contest the south-eastern New South Wales seat after incumbent Mike Kelly resigned last week.
Labor won Eden-Monaro by a slim margin of less than one per cent in 2019, but Ms McBain says she's ready.
She said, "Campaigning starts right now and that is making sure that I get across to residents, to visit businesses, to understand the deep-seated issues in Eden-Monaro. Mike Kelly was a hard-working local member for this community and made sure people's concerns were heard in Canberra, and I want to continue that legacy."
A date for the contest is yet to be announced, with coronavirus restrictions expected to cause a delay.
