NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian says NSW Police will be given the power to enforce bans on gatherings of two or more people, as the number of coronavirus cases in the state stabilises.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says public gatherings of more than two people are banned, with states and territories given the option to make it legally enforceable.

Some public areas will also be shut down, including playgrounds, outdoor gyms and skateparks, while bootcamps will be restricted to two people.

Queensland police will issue on the spot fines to anyone who breaches the federal governments updated social distancing measures or quarantine orders.

Meanwhile, New South Wales will quickly enforce the new rules limiting gatherings from midnight tonight [[Mon 30 March]].

Premiere Gladys Berejiklian says she acknowledges the measures are difficult, but is urging people to comply for the good of the community.

"I know that once everybody has absorbed these changes. Once everyone has worked out what works for them, we'll all adjust. We'll all adjust and we'll all think of innovative ways to get through this as best we can and I'm still optimistic about our capacity to adjust, our capacity to support one another and who would have known that a phone call or a text message can have so much more significance today then it used to before and those little things matter."

Premier Berejiklian said from 12am Tuesday, the new rules would be enforced in NSW and urged people to stick to strict social-distancing rules.

"If you can work from home, you should. If you can learn from home, you should. If you can stay at home you should," Ms Berejiklian said.
