The number of women in the Australian parliament is at a record high with female representation now making up a third of all federal MPs, following the May election.

The Liberal National Party now has 28 women across the parliament - fourteen in the Lower House and fourteen in the senate.

While it is an increase from the previous term - its almost half of Labor's 46 female representatives - who now have 28 MPs and 18 senators.

The Labor party is now closer to making its quota of 50 per cent women by 2025.

While there is still a long way to go to reach gender parity in the corridors of power, new female members are hoping to make a mark on the 46th parliament.
