Environmental activists are warning of a potential disaster if oil drilling is allowed to proceed in the Great Australian Bight.

The Great Australian Bight is home to a unique collection of marine life.

Due to its remoteness and the rough, often hostile, seas, it is a place relatively untouched by humans.

In recent years, several major oil companies have expressed their interest in the region.

The Norwegian company Statoil is the latest after taking over two exploration permits from BP last year.
