Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is in for a fight over changing the way the GST is distributed, with some states angered by a plan he touted in the West.
Other states are rebelling against Malcolm Turnbull's plan to change the way the GST is distributed.
The prime minister told the WA Liberal Party state conference he would work with premiers to put in a floor to how low a state's share of the revenue could drop - a plan that would greatly benefit the West.
But he is in for a fight, with federal Labor frontbencher Helen Polley telling ABC radio on Monday: "Certainly the alarm bells are ringing loud and clear down here in Tasmania".
Senator Polley criticised what she called another "thought-bubble", warning it would have a devastating impact on Tasmanians and South Australians.
"Yet again Mr Turnbull goes to WA, espouses a change in the GST - coincidentally they're heading to a state election and on the other side of the country down here he'll say something completely different," she said.
Finance Minister Mathias Cormann has said a gradual phase-in means other states would not be disadvantaged.
