The findings of the Speak Out Against Racism survey indicate that racism remains widespread in Australian schools.
Nearly 5,000 students in New South Wales and Victoria were interviewed for the study by the Australian National University and Western Sydney University.
The results suggest that more than 40 per cent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and those from ethnic minority backgrounds, had been discriminated against by their peers.
More than a third reported experiencing discrimination in wider society.
While close to 20 per cent of Indigenous students said they faced discrimination from teachers.
