Rare Asiatic black bear seen in Korean DMZ

A rare Asiatic black bear has been spotted out for a walk in demilitarized zone between North and South Korea.


South Korea’s Ministry of Environment said a rare Asiatic black the bear was photographed by research equipment installed in the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ).

ABC News reports that the photo of the Asiatic black bear was taken in October last year by one of 92 camera-like devices installed by the National Institute of Ecology (NIE) inside the DMZ in 2014, according to ministry officials.

The Yonhap news agency said this was the first time an Asiatic black bear had been photographed within the DMZ.

The Ministry of Environment issued a statement saying that It is believed that the photographed bear, is about eight to nine months old and weighing about 25 to 35 kilograms, is a descendant of the Asiatic black bears that had inhabited the DMZ region for quite a long time.

The NIE speculates that at least three Asiatic black bears, including the baby bear's parents, are now residing in the DMZ.
