Rural New South Wales communities are bracing themselves for another ecological disaster, despite efforts to save local fish populations.

The Darling River, home to 60 different fish species and the scene of Australia's largest recorded fish kill.

More than a million fish died in the Darling River at Menindee between last December and January.

Locals say they’re desperate for a better water management plan, as the federal government sets aside an additional $300,000 to help states manage extreme fish kills during the summer months.

The federal emergency response plan for fish kills has just been made public, and includes money reallocated from the Emergency Contingency Fund.
