There have been emotional scenes in parliament, with the lower house debating same-sex marriage legislation and parliamentarians pledging to honour the will of the Australian people.

The first day of sitting since House of Representatives proceedings were delayed has seen many parliamentarians give passionate speeches on same-sex marriage, just weeks after a majority of Australians supported legalising it in the postal survey.

Introducing the bill, wearing a rainbow tie, Liberal M-P Warren Enstch recounted his own personal experience with and longtime support of the issue.

Federal opposition leader Bill Shorten also spoke in support of the legislation, making special mention of Labor Senator Penny Wong and her advocacy on the issue.

Meanwhile, the publishing of a register of senators' details has thrown speculation onto yet another parliamentarian - A-C-T Labor Senator Katy Gallagher.

Paperwork has revealed the British Home Office didn't confirm Senator Gallagher's renunciation of her citizenship by descent until August 16 last year - a month after nominations had closed.
