The Prime Minister has accused the Opposition of "grubby" racial "undertones" for questioning the history of the first Chinese-Australian woman to sit in parliament.

The Prime Minister Scott Morrison has defended embattled Liberal MP Gladys Liu, saying that she is “a great Australian” and accused Labor of “casting a smear on Chinese Australians.”

Having repeatedly denied any association with a group linked to the Chinese Communist Party -- the Victorian M-P now concedes she was an honorary member of the China Overseas Exchange Association for more than a decade.

That's something S-B-S News understands was not disclosed to the Liberal Party by its candidate.

Intelligence officers reportedly warned the party not to pre-select Ms Liu, having previously advised former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull against attending a meet-and-greet she arranged last year -- because of the guest list.

On Thursday, Labor unsuccessfully tried to force Ms Liu to address the Parliament in person.
