South Korean rising star Soonwoo Kwons debut at the Australian Open is over after defeated by German Jan-Lenard Struff in an opening round on 16 January at the Melbourne Park.


Soonwoo Kwon ’s debut at Australian Open is over but his experience at a Melbourne court has enhanced his ambitions.

South Korean rising star Soonwoo Kwon’s debut at the Australian Open is over after defeated by German Jan-Lenard Struff in an opening round on 16 January at the Melbourne Park.

However, the 21-year-old rookie of a major competition became more confident at himself as a professional player with his first experience at the Australian Open.

He said in an exclusive interview with SBS, “I prepared a lot before the Australian Open and a bit regret that I did not exert my full capability in the first match against Struff.

“In particular, I realized I was not very familiar with a court at the Melbourne Park.

“With my first experience at the Australian Open, I have learned a lot and become more confident at myself a professional tennis player.

Jan-Lennard Struff has come off a straight sets win over Kwon Soon-woo that took 25 games to decide.

In the victory, Struff won 87 percent of his first serve points and 58 percent of his second serve points.

Struff cruised in his opening round victory, dropping just five first set points and hitting 45 winners in a little over an hour.

He will face Roger Federer in the 2nd round.
