Sydney Morning Heralds Beijing correspondent Kirsty Needham wrote a report focusing on how the new Korean president Moon Jae-in would change international relations around Korean peninsula.


Sydney Morning Herald reported that liberal Moon Jae-in claimed victory in South Korean presidential election on May 9. The report described 64 years old new president as a former human rights lawyer and son of North Korean refugees who ended almost a decade of conservative rule.

Sydney Morning Herald in particular focused on Moons remarks about his willingness to visit North Korea.

"If necessary, I will fly straight to Washington. I will go to Beijing and Tokyo too, and I will go to Pyongyang if conditions allow it," he said.

The report interviewed Robert Kelly, political science professor at Pusan National University to have a look into intensively international relations around Korean peninsula during Moons administration.

"He won't go along with Trump. He would like to talk to North Korea and he wants to go to Pyongyang," Professor Kelly told Fairfax Media.
