The number of passengers going through Sydney Airport's gates rose 4.7 per cent to 3.5 million in November.

International traffic, with 1.2 million passengers passing through, was up 7.5 per cent in the month, compared to November 2015, while domestic traffic was up 3.2 per cent to 2.3 million people.

Chief executive Kerrie Mather said the strong lift in international traffic growth was due to the starting of three new routes from China during November, which will add about 229,000 seats annually.
