The 2019 Symposium on Enhancing and Enriching the Australia-Korea Business and Cultural Relationship was held at the Korean Cultural Centre, Sydney on May 29 and May 30.
The event was co-organised by the Australia-Korea Business Council and the University of South Australia Business School.
The purpose of the Symposium is to bring together industry and government representatives at the forefront of the Australia-Korea relationship for a robust and honest discussion on the trends, untapped opportunities and challenges present in the bilateral relationship.
Speakers at the symposium included Bill Paterson, former Australian Ambassador to Korea, Kylie Bell, Trade and Investment NSW director, Alex Joiner, IFM Investors chief economist, Ian Williams, Deputy Chairman at the Australia-Korea Business Council and Daniel Burrows, Division Director at Macquarie Group.
Professor Gordon Flake, the founding CEO of the Perth USAsia Centre at the University of Western Australia, who delivered the keynote address at the symposium, said that Korea is a very important country to Australia.
“South Korea is Australia’s important partner in security, in trade, in investment, in science and development and most recently in resources,” Mr Flake said.

“So it is a very important relationship, but one that has potential to be even more important still.”
He also said that the investment relationship between Australia and Korea is very much under done, therefore there is a need to raise the awareness of the opportunities that exist in the Korean market.
