Australia Day is the official national day of Australia. It is celebrated annually on 26 January to mark the day the first fleet of British ships led by Governor Arthur Phillip arrived at Sydney Cove in 1788. However, in modern days, Australia Day becomes a day to celebrate diverse society, award its citizens who made enormous achievement and welcome new members of the country. Therefore, a lot of councils hold a citizenship ceremony on the day.
Korean-born MRI radiographer Cheol Woo No is one of many who celebrate their first Australia Day as a part of it. The Lidcombe resident had a Australian citizenship ceremony with his two children on November 13, 2017 after 10 years of living in Sydney.
Mr No talks SBS Korean program he decided to become a citizen because he considered benefits that his children would have when they go to a University as well as his hope to make political influence in regards to critical issues in our society including exploiting young working holiday participants from Korean.
“I still can’t feel like that I am an Australian but I would like to be part of every possible election. Although my appearance is Korean, I would do everything to be a proud Australian holding an Australian passport wherever I go.”
