The Advertiser argues in its editorial that the election result should be a wake up call for Mr Turnbull and he must deliver the best performance from this unusual federal Parliament.

Yesterday, this lucky country learnt who would run it for the next three years. Labor Leader Bill Shorten threw in the towel after a week of counting and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, shaken by his political near-death experience, got a second chance to show himself as a true leader.

It is up to those who sit within it to make this work, and ensure our high living standards are maintained. Luck alone will no longer take Australia where it needs and wants to go.

This result should be a wake up call for Mr Turnbull.

The country, exhausted by the revolving door of prime ministers in the past decade, is running out of patience for excuses.

Mr Turnbull must summon the skill to decisively navigate the Senate, while dealing with the Opposition and crossbench.

Mr Turnbull went into the election campaign with a mantra of growth, jobs and living within our means. He must now make that mantra reality.

An equally vital role will be played by all of the opposition parties. They now have a choice between obstructionism, or engagement for the good of the nation.

They will be judged harshly if personal political ambition is allowed to trump collective national progress.

Australia is indeed a lucky country, blessed with advantages that are the worlds envy, but we have suffered from politics more focused on the bubble of Canberra than the people.

Luck is no longer good enough. We must shape our own future with both hard work and accept nothing less than a first-rate performance from this unusual federal Parliament.
