The AGE argues that we need to ensure safe and high-quality aged care, and this is what we want for ourselves and for others as we are all getting older.
Monash University research revealed that preventable deaths in nursing homes have surged in the past decade - a 400 per cent rise to 5.3 per 1000 such residents.
According to the AGE, the proportion of the population aged 65 years and over will be about one in four by the fast-approaching middle of this century.
And the paper explains that Australia has 235,000 residents of aged care homes, of whom 83 per cent are classified as requiring high care, including dementia care.
Against this backdrop, the AGE argues that we need to ensure that our aging population gets decent care with dignity and choice. And it emphasises that we want it for ourselves and for others as we are all getting older.
