The Australian argues that citizenship test changes are in line with the national interest in many ways.

The Australian argues that there is no disputing the fact Immigration Minister Peter Duttons proposed citizenship rule changes, including a more rigorous English language test, set the bar much higher for would-be Australians.

According to the paper, citizenship applicants face comprehension questions about carbon emissions, clean coal, cinema and newspaper production after reading passages of text.

A tougher English language test for prospective citizens is controversial. The Australian, however, argues that strong English skills enhance newcomers job prospects or their chances of undertaking further job training or university study. It also says that setting the bar higher should make it easier and more rewarding for prospective citizens to integrate with the wider community and access the best of what the nation has to offer.

The Australian points out that the government has a responsibility to be careful in choosing to whom it grants the privilege of citizenship when many people seeking new homelands want to come to Australia - one of the worlds most stable, tolerant and prosperous nations.
