Independent Senator Cory Bernardi criticises cartoonist Larry Pickering and former Liberal MP Ross Cameron for delivering an own goal against conservatives by making totally inappropriate comments at a controversial fundraising dinner.
Mr Cameron told a Q Society event on Thursday that the NSW division of the Liberal Party was a gay club and described The Sydney Morning Herald as The Sydney Morning Homosexual.
Senator Bernardi, who spoke at another Q Society dinner on Friday with Nationals MP George Christensen, said the men had done some damage to those on the conservative side of politics.
The society calls itself Australias premier Islam-critical organisation and topics at this weeks fundraisers included defending freedom of speech.
Senator Bernardi, who quit the Liberal Party on Tuesday, had made it very clear to the organisers that the comments made the previous evening were totally inappropriate.
Bill Shorten said today that Mr Christensens attendance at the pretty extreme Q Society fundraiser, which aired pretty wild and divisive things, was more proof the Turnbull government was divided.
If youre a divided government you cant run the country, he said.
The Greens and Getup have called on Malcolm Turnbull to condemn Mr Christensen for appearing at the event.
