The Australian argues that the government is pursuing fair and reasonable reform that should help protect quality.
The Australian believes the Turnbull government needs to reform higher education fees and funding.
Simon Birmingham unveiled the government's revamped university package in Canberra on Monday night.
As part of the shake-up, student fees would increase by 1.8 per cent next year and continue rising to a total of 7.5 per cent by 2021.
The Government has abandoned a previously announced 20 per cent cut to university funding.
Once students start earning, the repayment threshold for their loans will kick in at $42,000 from mid-2018 - a substantial drop from the current $55,000 threshold.
The Australian says generally, university graduates enjoy higher levels of employment and wages, and greater opportunities to travel and work abroad than many other taxpayers. In return for that graduate premium, fairness requires that students shoulder a greater share of their degree costs as the budget is repaired.
It also points out that avoiding the funding cut included in the Abbott package would maintain the value of higher education as one of our most successful export industries.
