The Australian argues that the Turnbull government has been incapable of steering its own course due to the citizenship shambles and the enmity between the parliamentarians and the onus falls on the government to restore order.
The Australian pointedly says it has been a terrible week for Malcolm Turnbulls government and the government has been incapable of steering its own course with Labor questioning the governments legitimacy because three of its ministers have been revealed as dual citizens.
The paper indicates that although it was difficult for the government to avoid the citizenship shambles, the Turnbull government has managed the situation poorly after these instances surfaced. As a result, the dual citizenship crisis has been exacerbated.
It says there is no logical reason Matt Canavan should have been forced to resign from cabinet yet Barnaby Joyce and Senator Nash were not as it shows no consistency and the authority of the Deputy Prime Minister will be undermined when he needs to be Acting Prime Minister when Malcolm Turnbull heads overseas.
The paper also explains that the hysterical claims from Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and the Prime Minister alleging a conspiracy by Labor to collude with its cousins across the ditch to bring down the government simply added fuel to a controversy the Coalition should have been trying to smother in that Bill Shortens obvious tactic was to create as much noise and chaos around these issues as possible to foster a sense of crisis.
The Australian emphasises that the onus falls, as it should, on the government to restore order and at a time of global instability and economic precariousness, we need solid, stable government in Canberra.
