It also says that aside from its promise to protect ministers of religion and civil celebrants from being forced to marry same-sex couples, the government has said nothing yet about key issues such as: Will church schools and parishes be free to teach their own doctrines on marriage? Will church schools and hospitals be free to choose staff in sympathy with church teachings on marriage? Will church welfare agencies be forced to accommodate same-sex couples in fostering and adoption arrangements? Will online campaigns against businesses and professionals who uphold traditional marriage be tolerated? Could graduates of religious universities opposed to same-sex marriage be refused professional registration to nurse, teach or practise law?
The Australian stresses that all political parties should back freedom of religious belief and practice.
