The Australian argues that brainwashing toddlers to repudiate our national story is unconscionable.

The Australian says childrens lasting impressions of their nation are shaped in childcare centres and kindergartens. Therefore, these centres should not engage in cultural cringe. And it says there is an argument that centres denying our national day should not receive state funding.

The paper points out that the sensitivities of those who decry January 26 as invasion day are misplaced. Whatever the views of activists, politically correct academics and educators supporting the council for its ridiculous move to cancel Australia Day citizenship celebrations and stage an event marking the loss of indigenous culture, they have no right to inflict their prejudices on young children.

The Australian argues brainwashing toddlers to repudiate our national story is unconscionable. And it suggests that instilling patriotism and pride, with a brief, age-appropriate view of how our nation came into being, would be far healthier.
