An attempt by Tony Abbott to drag the Liberal Party to the political right has antagonized his supporters and there has been speculation that it was a flagrant attempt to visit revenge on Malcolm Turnbull.
Mr Abbott suggested a five-point plan to recover the government's conservative credentials: cutting immigration, ending the renewable energy target, cutting taxes, cutting spending, and scrapping the Human Rights Commission.
The Australian argues that his comment is a bit much to bear as he promised there would be no wrecking, no undermining and no sniping.
However, the paper says that offering constructive ideas while the Coalition lays the groundwork for a crucial budget would be preferable and calls for Mr Turnbull to consider Mr Abbotts ideas related to immigration and the renewable energy target.
The Australian emphasizes that ministers should make every endeavor to ensure the success of the Turnbull government by focusing on community concerns and outlining a more ambitious program of economic reform and fiscal repair.
