The Australian argues that Xi Jinping should not ignore Donald Trumps warning- China should cooperate with the U.S. to solve the North Korean nuclear threat- to avert a global trade war and this is in its own long-term interests.
Donald Trump has warned that co-operation on issues such as the threat of a global trade war hinges on China ending its inaction and doing much more to solve the nuclear threat posed by Pyongyang.
The Australian argues that it would be unwise for Xi Jinping to ignore Mr Trumps warning. If China is not going to solve North Korea, we will, the US President has said, adding: China will either decide to help us with North Korea or they wont … if they do, that will be very good for China, and if they dont it wont be good for anyone.
The paper also points out that Mr Xi must understand Beijings decisive influence should be utilized to deter North Korea from developing nuclear weapons and the long-range missiles capable of delivering them to the US mainland and countries across our region.
It also says it is in the interests of both sides - as well as the global economy - that the two leaders step back from the trade war flagged by Mr Trumps protectionist intentions during the election campaign.
The Australian argues that Mr Xi should show his willingness to help reduce the North Korean nuclear threat to make progress on this vital issue.
