The Daily Telegraph argues that students themselves will be the biggest winner under the significant improvements to the HSC syllabus.

The Daily Telegraph points out that NSW high school education has been compromised by a lack of rigour and the loss of traditional teaching structures and sources.

The classical works of four authors- Charles Dickens, Shakespeare, Jane Austen and Joseph Conrad-will be mandatory for Year 11 and Year 12 students under a revamped HSC syllabus.

Educators have allowed students to choose much easier and softer options rather than aiming to enhance the students via the classical works of great writers.

The paper said other improvements abound, in line with the more traditional and much better approach.

There have been concerns among employers that high school graduates have a lack of basic skills in literacy and numeracy.

The Daily Telegraph believes that students will be the biggest winner along with employers under the significant improvements to the HSC syllabus.
