The Sydney Morning Herald has branded the recent Lower House chaos as just a flesh wound and argued in its editorial that the chances of another early election grow day by day.

Labor was opportunistic to seize on the blunders of three ministers whose actions expose the Coalition's flimsy majority in the lower house.

Above all the events reveal how little has changed since the election. Mr Turnbull cannot afford more weeks like this because his leadership is not beyond challenge and the chances of an early election grow by the day.

But Mr Shorten is taking a gamble by being so robust and not respecting any mandate Mr Turnbull might claim from the Coalition's election victory. Chaos hardly makes Mr Shorten look prime ministerial, and opens the door to alternative Labor leaders with more gravitas.

More obstructionism will also feed the growing discontent in the community that governments of either side are incapable of delivering on their promises.
