The perennial debate over whether Australia should become a republic has been revived by the recent Australian visit of Prince Harry and his wife Meghan that attracted cheering, enthusiastic crowds.


During the recent royal visit to Australia by Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, there was no doubting the enthusiasm of the crowds.

Former Labor senator and republican Graham Richardson says the new generation of royals has squashed the republican movement in the country.

Republicans and even some monarchists argue that sort of support for the royals should be seen as distinct from the question of whether there is support for an Australian republic.

Is there a nexus between support for the royals and the retention of Australia's constitutional monarchy?
