A controversial Sydney University lecturer Tim Anderson visited Pyongyang amid rising North Korea tension and his learning and solidarity visit has faced a major backlash.

Dr Anderson teaching international politics took a week trip to North Korea in August and he tweeted a photo of his colleague journalist Ms Eva Barlett holding a North Korean flag with the following words: SolIdarity with the independent #Korean people in the face of renewed US aggression. #DPRK.

The Canadian Ms Barlett is a regular contributor to the Russia government-funded media outlet Russia Today.

Education Minister Simon Birmingham says Dr Anderson is an 'embarrassment' to the University of Sydney and academia in general and the University should consider sacking the lecturer.

However, yet the university does not seem to take any action against Dr Anderson, who is paid up to $130,000. The Sydney University released a statement saying staff can spend their leave however they wish.
