The Guardian reports that animal welfare groups call for halt to exports to South Korea after secret footage shows ‘distressing’ treatment of horses in Korean abattoir.

The Guardian says the half-brother of beloved thoroughbred Australian champion racehorse Winx is one of thousands of exported thoroughbreds killed for meat in Korea.

The RSPCA has described the conditions of the Korean abattoir is “very distressing”.

According to the paper, footage filmed secretly at the Nonghyup abattoir in South Korea last year shows horses being repeatedly beaten on the head with lengths of black polyethylene pipe in an attempt to herd them into the facility.

The Guardian Australia uncovered that the horse Bareul Jeong, who shared a father with Winx, was killed for meat processing by citing Korean studbook.

Winx is the beloved thoroughbred Australian champion racehorse. Winx was retired in April after a 33-race winning streak.

The horse was named "Australian of the Year" by The Daily Telegraph on Jan 24 this year and the Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, presented a copy of her best-selling biography to the Queen on Monday.

The Guardian says that the Greens and animal welfare group have called for halt to exports to South Korea until conditions in the slaughterhouse meet Australian standards.
