Melbourne cyanide murder case: accused plead not guilty; to stand trial

The accused in Sam Abraham murder case - Sam's wife Sofia Sam and her friend Arun Kamalasanan pleaded not guilty to the charges today at the Melbourne Magistrates Court. The magistrate ordered both accused to stand trial at the Supreme Court.

Sofia Sam and her friend Arun Kamalasanan are charged with poisoning Sofia's husband Sam Abraham to death. Mr. Kamalasnan is facing another charge of an attempted murder also. 

However both Sofia and Sam pleaded not guilty to the charges laid against them, after cross examining the prosecution witnesses in the committal hearing held at Melbourne Magistrate's Court. 

In the two-day long committal hearing,  many witnesses including toxicologists, forensic experts, Arun's former housemate gave evidences in the court. 

According to the toxicology report, high level of cyanide was found in Sam's blood and liver. A dose of sedative drug was also found in his system.

The case is transferred to the Supreme Court of Victoria for directions hearing on Wednesday. The pair will stand trial in the Supreme Court. 

Sam Abraham was found dead at his home in Melbourne's Epping in October 2015. His wife Sofia and her friend Arun have been arrested and charged for poisoning Sam to death. Arun was also charged for attempting to murder Sam inside his car at the Lalor train station in July 2015, three months before he was dead.
