Air India has decided to reserve the six seats in the third row of its economy class exclusively for women passengers on its domestic flights. Meenakshi Malik, General Manager of Air India’s revenue management, informed the media that the arrangement will come into effect on January 18.

The initiative will be the first ever for passengers traveling by air.

The announcement came days after Air India was named as the third worst performing international airline in the world.

According to the reports, the new decision is being made to ensure the safety of female passengers. “We feel, as national carrier, it is our responsibility to enhance comfort level to female passengers,” said Meenakshi Malik.

Airline will start blocking seats for women from January 18 and this will not cost the passenger any extra out of pocket expenses.

The decision came soon after an incident of a passenger groping a female co-passenger on-board a Mumbai-New York Air India flight in December last year.
