Sujith has an aggressive type of leukemia known as Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Philadelphia Positive. This was diagnosed 5 months ago and Sujith has been undergoing chemotherapy ever since. He is currently undergoing his sixth round of chemo at Wesley Hospital in Brisbane.
Sujith now requires a bone marrow transplant. According to his doctors, he needs nearly a 100% match as possible as anything less is very risky. The Australian national registry and international registry are all in the process of searching for a donor. It is said that his donor is more likely to be of Indian or Asian descent. As a first step of donation, a blood test is sent from potential donor to check for the tissue type match. If it matches, the stem cells is collected from blood through a special machine. This is similar to blood donation though it takes about 4 hours.
How to join the registry ?
If you are between the age of 18 and 45 years, in good health and reside in Australia, meet the eligibility criteria. If you are ready to donate for anyone around the globe, call the Australian Red Cross Blood Service on 13 14 95. You can make an appointment to donate blood and join the registry.
