When the Australians are looking forward for the Census night, there are some innovative scammers who are utilizing this opportunity to grab personal information from the public.
It is reported that people who sound professional, purport to be census workers from the Australian Bureau of Statistics are offering help to the public in filling the Census form over the telephone.
The callers, purporting to be census workers, ask for some basic details such as name, date of birth, address and license number. They then hang up the phone ensuring to call back on census night to go through the online census form.
However, Australian Bureau of Statistics have confirmed that they will never call the public to complete the census over the phone. Census Victoria director Annette Kelly told that anyone who needed help in filling the Census form should seek the help of a trusted family member or friend.
Annette Kelly added, "Census field officers must carry signed ABS identification cards and carry bright yellow satchels at all times when conducting Census duties."
The Bureau of Statistics expects the August 9 census to be Australia’s biggest ever online event, with more than 15 million people completing paperless forms.
