Unlike yester years, United Nations is in a plan to commemorate India’s 70th Independence Day as a memorable one. As part of this, the UN Postal Administration is all set to issue a stamp to mark the birth centenary of India’s Carnatic music legend M.S. Subbulakshmi that falls on September 16, India’s Permanent Mission to the U.N. said in a press statement.

The event is scheduled to be held on August 15th  at the United Nations General Assembly coinciding with the 70th Indian Independence Day celebrations.

Another highlight of the event is a special concert by Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman. The internationally acclaimed musician will enthrall the UN diplomats and international dignitaries.

AR Rahman will be the second Indian artist after Subbulakshmi to perform at the U.N. hall.

A photo exhibition that will depict various facets, achievements and moments of Subbulakshmi’s life will also form part of the event at the world body’s headquarters from August 15-19.

Subbulakshmi is the first ever musician to be awarded with India’s highest civilian honour the Bharat Ratna. She was also the first Indian to be invited by the then U.N. Secretary General Late U Thant to perform at the General Assembly in October 1966.

Indian Minister of State for External Affairs M.J. Akbar will attend the events at the U.N.
