What is Japanese encephalitis and what risk does it pose in Australia?

A rare outbreak of Japanese encephalitis virus has so far spread to humans in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. Carried by mosquitoes, there are fears the flooding disaster on Australia’s eastern seaboard will further fuel the outbreak.
