Bernadette Atkinson was crowned Miss NAIDOC Week in 1988. The theme that year was “Recognise and Share the Survival of the Oldest Culture in the World.”
Her daughter, Isabella Atkinson’ was nominated by the community and went on to win the coveted title in 2018 giving the recognition a very special meaning.
NAIDOC 2018's theme, 'Because of her, we can!' drew Indigenous women to the forefront, highlighting their essential contribution as role models at every level.
Since winning the coveted title Isabella Atkinson has stepped up to the call and is striving to follow in her mother’s footsteps promoting Culture and connection to Country.
Both women work at the Koorie Heritage Trust in Melbourne in various capacities advancing Aboriginal Culture while driving their own independent businesses at the same time
Bernadette Atkinson is also the owner of Winyarr Dreaming Creations which has a focus on cultural connection and learning about Marngrooks and culture through workshops or information sessions.
As a typical Melburnian woman of her age, Isabella is a passionate make-up artist running her own successful business. She also thrives in promoting culture in the community and public events.
