“There is often a preconceived idea of who might or might not experience an eating disorder, based on stereotypes and other assumptions.” - Kevin Barrow, CEO, Butterfly Foundation

The Butterfly Foundation provides support for eating disorders and body image issues. The organisation has joined a team of researchers studying the prevalence of eating disorders among Indigenous community.

This study builds on a new research from Western Sydney University suggesting that 27 per cent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults have an eating disorder, compared with 16 per cent of non-Indigenous adults, also higher for school students too.

In a conversation with NITV Radio, Kevin Barrow, the Butterfly Foundation CEO, explained that his organisation recognizes that unhelpful stereotypes around who experiences eating disorders may often result in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples not receiving adequate treatment and support.
