“He was too young to enrol. Many of them were too young to enlist. His name at the time was Valentine Hares (with an S), they changed it to Hare, then Ayr. They misspelt Valentine as well. So, we couldn’t find him at all.”

In early June 2020 NITV Radio featured a story with the late great and much respected community Queensland Elder, Aunty Iris Glenbar.

Also know as Aunty Iris to many in her family and the community, Aunty spoke with NITV Radio to share with us her own personal family story of her beloved Uncle Valentine Hare who served in WW1.

And a CULTURAL WARNING - This story does feature the voice of a much loved and respected Community Elder whom has passed. And SBS have been granted permission from family to share Aunty Iris Glenbar's voice and image.
