Truth telling, justice and unity were at the heart of this year’s Elder in Residence oration, delivered by respected Aboriginal writer, activist and filmmaker Richard Frankland.


The annual oration, which invites reflection on First Nations issues while confronting Australia’s past and present, was delivered by proud Gunditjmara man, Uncle Richard Frankland.

Stepping into that space, Uncle Richard reflected on the significance of continuing Aunty Rhoda’s legacy, while calling on audiences to engage with truth telling and the realities still faced by First Nations communities.

His address honoured the resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and highlighted the ongoing need for unity, justice and meaningful change.

Speaking with NITV Radio, Uncle Richard also shared memories of his friendship with Aunty Rhoda and what it means for him to continue her legacy.

The Elder in Residence Oration will air on NITV on Sunday 5 July 5:30pm, wuth an encore on Monday 6 July 10:15pm. It will also be available on SBS On Demand.
