Torres Strait Islander VR game teaches players about culture, traditional knowledge and environment at the same time
Dr Rhett Loban is a Torres Strait Islander man with connections to Mabuyag and Boigu. He is the Director of Indigenous Education in the School of Computer Science, and Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Technology Sydney.
His research and educational work is at the intersection of interactive immersive technology, culture and activity-centred learning and pedagogy.
We met Dr Loban at the Indigenous Science Experience day in Redfern, where he was presenting his VR game.
Rhett talked about his VR game: The Torres Strait Virtual Reality that teaches the players about aspects of the Torres Strait Islander culture, stories, customs, practices and viewpoint through an immersive process.
Talking to NITV Radio Rhett Loban also discussed wider topics, such as how VR can possibly be implemented in education: not only to play the games, but how the students would learn a lot whilst crating a game and researching the topic.
